Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Halfa, Iowa. Whether for drug or alcohol detection, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Our hair tests provide analysis options for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized needs.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has increasingly become a preferred method. Many employers, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse experts favor hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. This method is popular with those enforcing strict drug policies, offering a detection window of up to 90 days, observed collection, and high anti-tampering assurance. However, for drug use within a recent 5-day window, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is acknowledged as an effective mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When sourced close to the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection span for substances like alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hairs (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and validation. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. When discussing head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in the lab processing for drug test results, including Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a specimen in a lab's system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns an LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and finalizes any additional data input absent in an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. While economically efficient for clearing a vast number of samples, a positive screening result necessitates confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples that are presumably positive during Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drug traces are isolated from hair at a lower concentration than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), hence, hair drug testing presents a methodological challenge.

Positive screening results are substantiated via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples presumed to be positive undergo washing prior to confirmation as appropriate. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab procedure is subject to analysis under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Testing integrity: It is notably challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the findings.
  • Historical insight: This method provides a usage pattern over time, rather than recent consumption only.

Limitations:

  • Recent usage detection: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically more costly compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth variations may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
