Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Hepburn, Iowa. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, and we provide testing locations in every city across the nation capable of conducting a hair test. Generally, you need to have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair either on your head or body for testing. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or include other specialized hair testing formulas.

Lately, the trend in drug testing methods has seen a rise in employing hair follicle drug tests. Businesses, judicial authorities, and Substance Abuse specialists are increasingly opting for hair drug tests rather than the conventional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, legal entities, and those on probation often turn to hair follicle drug tests. A significant advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection timeframe for drug use, reaching up to 90 days, involving a supervised collection procedure, and being nearly impossible to tamper with. Nonetheless, for detecting drug use within the preceding 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the roots, hair can provide a detection period of up to about three months for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and can be transported with ease.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) taken nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample amount for initial screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG, additional testing, and/or more than 10-panel tests, it is advised to have 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler's scale is recommended to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equal quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other hair types (such as facial or underarm hair).

Process Overview

The primary phases in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This phase ensures that the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigns a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for the presence of drugs. While Screening is a resource-efficient approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, results that are positive require confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is judged presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as required. The full laboratory process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug usage up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Difficulty in deception: Hair drug tests are hard to tamper with, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Chronic usage information: It offers insights into the pattern of drug usage over time, beyond recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally have higher costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Factors such as hair color and personal variability in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
