In Hubbard, Iowa, complete hair follicle drug testing is offered by Accredited Drug Testing. Whether you require a hair test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with testing centers across all U.S. cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body suffices for testing. Hair tests can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests are increasingly being adopted for drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often choose hair tests over urine tests. Especially favored by employers with strict drug policies, hair tests provide a detection window of up to 90 days, are collected under observation, and offer a challenge-free screening. For drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively challenging to adulterate, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (resembling the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We advise measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair may be obtained. In context, head hair pertains specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This consists of ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in the bulk of samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally admissible. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are drawn from the hair at notably lower concentrations than alternative methodologies (ex. urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening presents the greatest challenge among methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited in line with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, compared to shorter detection periods of urine tests.
  • Difficult to tamper: It is quite challenging to cheat a hair drug test, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over a duration, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Even though often termed "hair follicle tests", the test itself assesses the hair strand and not the follicle situated beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Hubbard, IA, hair follicle tests are becoming the preferred method over urine tests. The key advantage of hair tests is their superior detection accuracy and reliability. While traditional urine tests often have limitations, hair follicle testing offers an enhanced detection window and reduced likelihood of tampering, ensuring that results are both trustworthy and comprehensive.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Hubbard, IA, provides an extensive detection window, making it invaluable for employers seeking comprehensive insights into an individual's substance use history. By offering the ability to detect drug use up to 90 days prior, hair tests furnish a detailed perspective of employee behavior, facilitating more informed hiring and monitoring decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Hubbard, IA, hair follicle testing is regarded for its resistance to tampering. This method decreases the chance of sample manipulation, offering unchallengeable results. Unlike other tests, which might allow adulteration, hair testing provides certainty through its stringent collection and examination processes, ensuring accuracy and integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
