In Hull, Iowa, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Whether required for drug or alcohol detection, our hair testing offerings are available at centers across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. We tailor tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more.

The use of hair follicle testing for drugs has grown recently. This method, preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, offers a longer detection window than urine tests, up to 90 days, collected under supervision, ensuring reliability. It excels in detecting historical drug use, though urine tests remain best for recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When harvested right next to the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to alter, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, optional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent portion of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test outcome comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails initially handling a sample in a laboratory system. This process includes ensuring that the sample was sealed and dispatched appropriately, creating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial swift drug abuse check. While it offers an economical method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening must be verified to be court-admissible. Samples that yield a presumptive positive during Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample appear positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are separated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug testing ranks as the most complex method to perform.

Positive screening validations are carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples presumed to be positive undergo washes before Confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection range.
  • Tough to deceive: Cheat attempts on a hair drug test prove highly challenging, thus enhancing result reliability.
  • Shows historical data: It portrays a timeline of drug consumption, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • No immediate detection: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug analysis methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Elements like hair color and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite frequently being called "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The superiority of hair testing over urine tests in Hull, IA is clear due to its extended detection timeline, capturing drug use up to 90 days back. This provides a more comprehensive view of an individual's substance habits compared to traditional methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
