Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug evaluations in Jordan, Iowa. When a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair assessments, with centers in every city nationwide capable of executing a hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is needed. Hair analyses can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair test options.

Of late, hair follicle drug tests are increasingly utilized in drug evaluations. Many workplaces, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, legal entities, and those on probation favor hair analysis due to its extended detection range for drug usage—up to 90 days—overseen in a direct observation process, making it nearly foolproof. Nevertheless, for drug usage detection within 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures long-term substance history by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and drug use. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or assessments beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. When scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result includes four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample undergoes initial processing into the lab’s system. This step verifies that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entry not carried out by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, positive screenings require confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Presumptively positive samples from Screening need a further confirmation.

For samples with a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair concentrations that are much lower than those found using other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter window.
  • Eludes tampering: Hair drug tests are difficult to cheat, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing types.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites present in hair.

Note: Although known as "hair follicle tests", this testing method analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Jordan, IA, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing in several ways. Hair assessments are renowned for their superior accuracy and extended detection periods. A standard highlight of hair tests is their ability to reveal drug use over a longer timeframe, a challenge for most urine analyses. Their reliability ensures fewer false negatives, aiding in comprehensive substance assessment.

The contrast between hair and urine testing in Jordan, IA, highlights the impressive detection capabilities of follicle tests. While urine tests cover shorter windows, hair analyses provide a robust record of substance intake for up to 90 days, making them a more effective tool for identifying habitual use and compliance with drug policies.

Extended Detection Window

In Jordan, IA, hair follicle testing is celebrated for its extended detection window. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
