Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Kamrar, Iowa. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing ensures that we have facilities across all cities nationwide equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. Hair analysis is customizable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity in drug testing methodologies. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often opt for hair tests over the standard urine tests. This test is favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation officers due to its longer detection period, typically up to 90 days, collection under observation, and resistance to tampering. However, urine tests remain most accurate for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The hair fiber encapsulates biomarkers of alcohol and drugs throughout its growth, offering a retrospective overview of substance use. When collected near the scalp, hair can detect alcohol and other substances for a period extending up to about three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

An ideal sample consists of a 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp, which yields 100mg of hair, suitable for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be sampled, the same amount of body hair may be used. References to head hair indicate scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing in the lab's system, which includes verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any required data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is efficient for ruling out drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be considered valid in legal contexts. Consequently, samples testing presumptively positive during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive after Screening, additional hair is used from the initial sample for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at a markedly lower concentration compared to other testing methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing particularly challenging.

Positive screening results are confirmed using techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation, if required. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, a longer duration compared to urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally challenging, thereby enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Reveals historical usage: It does not merely identify recent drug use but also provides a usage pattern over time.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly than other testing options.
  • Result variability: Differences in hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over traditional urine testing in Kamrar, IA. Precision and reliability set it apart, ensuring a more accurate assessment of substance use. Unlike urine tests, which detect drugs used recently, hair tests provide a longer detection window and are less prone to evasion, making them a superior choice for comprehensive drug testing.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Kamrar, IA provides a comprehensive overview of an individual’s substance use history. Covering up to 90 days, this method enables employers to gather substantial information about an applicant or employee's past drug use, offering a more complete picture than other methods with limited timeframes, thus ensuring informed decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
