Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Kanawha, Iowa. Whether you require a test for drugs or alcohol, we are experts in hair-based testing and operate facilities across all cities nationwide capable of performing such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary, collected from the crown or body. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly been chosen for drug assessments. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often favor hair tests over urine samples. Hair tests are preferred by those enforcing zero-tolerance policies, legal entities, and individuals on probation. The main advantage is the extended detection window, usually up to 90 days, involving direct observation collection and making tampering very difficult. Yet, for identifying recent use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended overview of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of developing hair. When sourced close to the scalp, hair can indicate alcohol and drug presence for up to about a 3-month period. It is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp generates 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional components, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest weighing the hair on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair might be procured. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair denotes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result involves four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample is initially assimilated into a lab's framework. This involves confirming proper sealing and shipment, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any data absent from an electronic chain of custody protocol.

The Screening phase consists of a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate most cases of drug usage, any positive result necessitates confirmation for judicial acceptability. Samples indicating a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo additional verification.

Should a sample be presumed positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the primary specimen and prepared for the Extraction phase. In this process, drugs are isolated from hair at substantially lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a presumptive positive outcome are cleansed before Confirmation as required. The complete laboratory operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can recognize drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine assessments, which have a briefer detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug assessment is highly improbable, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reflects a chronological record of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs become discernible in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments generally incur higher costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result disparities: Variables such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the assessment evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
