Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Kesley, Iowa. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, our centers nationwide can conduct these tests. Hair should be 1.5 to 2 inches long from the crown or body for use. Hair analyses can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

In recent developments, drug testing increasingly involves hair follicle tests. More employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are preferred for zero-tolerance policies. Their advantage is an extensive 90-day detection, observed collection, and resistance to tampering. For detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly viewed as an effective means for detecting substances like drugs and alcohol. By capturing biomarkers in the growing hair strand's fibers, hair gives a prolonged history of alcohol and other substance use. When cut near the scalp, hair offers up to about a three-month detection frame for both alcohol and drugs. The collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample comprising roughly 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for both screening and affirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair might be collected. When discussing head hair, it means scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for drug test results covers four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's process. This step ensures that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry that isn't available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for illicit drugs. Although Screening is an economical way to exclude drug use on most samples, a positive initial result must be confirmed for it to be considered valid in legal settings. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening need a secondary validation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and set for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at substantially lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing the most technically challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any initial positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positives are cleaned as necessary before confirmation. The entire laboratory chain from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair framework and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is quite tough, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Chronological drug use data: Provides a drug usage pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically costlier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the underneath hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
