Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in King, Iowa. If a hair or alcohol test is what you need, we specialize in hair analysis and have testing facilities available nationwide. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body for testing. Hair samples can be assessed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke testing solutions.
In recent times, drug testing approaches have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation agencies employ hair follicle tests. The main advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window, covering up to 90 days, and involves an observed sample collection, making it nearly foolproof. However, for detecting drugs used in the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

Hair analysis is increasingly seen as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the strands as they grow, providing an elongated account of drug or alcohol intake. When hair is sampled near the scalp, it can reveal drug or alcohol usage within a timeframe of roughly three months. The collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.
A 1.5-inch hair sample comprising about 200 strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. Specifically, "head hair" refers only to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other categories of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).
Process Overview
The process in the lab for managing a drug test result encompasses Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning entails the introductory processing of a sample into the lab's system. This process involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concluding any supplemental data entry not handled via an electronic chain of custody system.
Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening economically rules out drug use for most samples, any positive screening outcomes require confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that are initially positive in Screening necessitate a secondary Confirmation.
Should a sample test positive during Screening, additional hair is obtained from the initial sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as the most challenging practice to execute.
Confirmation for any positive Screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All potentially positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as warranted. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Note: Despite being frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strands, not the follicles beneath the scalp.

Remarkable advancements in sample preparation, detection, and identification of drug compounds have been presented. The manuscripts in this section presented novel approaches, such as multianalyte methods and on-line preparation which can enable rapid analysis and improve thorough forensic investigations.
Biomarkers and Pharmacokinetics: The identification and validation of reliable biomarkers and pharmacokinetic studies are fundamental aspects of drug testing and analysis. The impact of hair treatments on the oxidation/decomposition of drugs in hair was also explored, as the long-term fate of drugs incorporated in the keratin matrix. Furthermore, the SoHT meeting in Verona featured research on the identification and quantification of alcohol abuse biomarkers, their stability, and their correlation with exposure and other biomarkers.
Forensic Applications and Interpretation: One of the vital objectives of hair testing is its application in forensic investigations and legal proceedings. The SoHT meeting in Verona emphasized the significance of rigorous interpretation of analytical results and the need for standardized protocols. Manuscripts in this section present advancements in forensic toxicology, and have explored the challenges posed by emerging designer drugs and strategies to combat their proliferation. The pitfalls encountered when the exogenous/endogenous nature of a substance is questioned were presented and discussed. The special issue presents also manuscripts that delve into the ethical implications of drug testing in drug facilitated sexual assaults.
Clinical Applications of hair testing are witnessed by the insight on environmental tobacco smoke exposure, assessed by hair analysis in a population of students and the study of in utero-exposure to drugs of abuse through neonatal hair analysis. Exposure to drugs was also important in cases of child abuse/neglect, when the clinical purpose of hair testing merge with its forensic applications.
The legal framework surrounding hair testing and the achievement of guidelines to ensure fairness, accuracy, and confidentiality in drug testing practices have also been discussed, and the SoHT consensus on general hair testing and testing for drugs of abuse was presented at the meeting and published as a Letter to the Editor.
