In Lake City, Iowa, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair testing, our nationwide centers, including local ones, are equipped for testing hair for drugs or alcohol. Typically, having hair of 1.5 to 2 inches on your head is required, but body hair can also be used. The tests analyze substances like drugs and alcohol/ETG with customized options available.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular in recent years. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often favor hair tests over urine tests. This switch is due to factors like a longer detection window of up to 90 days, collection under observation, and lower chances of tampering. Notably, while hair tests have their advantages, urine tests remain more effective for revealing substances used in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly viewed as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged trace of alcohol and drugs by locking in biomarkers within the hair strand fibers as they grow. If gathered near the scalp, hair can offer around a 90-day window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to obtain, rather resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

Gathering a 1.5-inch segment of about 200 strands of hair (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is considered the optimal sample for conducting screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for measurement. If scalp hair is not available, the equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

In processing a drug test outcome, the laboratory follows four major stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into the lab’s system. This step includes checking that the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Whereas Screening is a budget-friendly option to dismiss drug usage in most samples, any screen testing positive needs confirmation to be legally eligible. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

For samples deemed presumptive positives during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are derived from hair at notably lower concentrations than those in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate method to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques confirm any positive results in the screening process. All presumptive positive samples are often cleansed before confirmation as required. The cycle from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug usage for up to 90 days, while urine tests cover a shorter detection range.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is incredibly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring result accuracy.
  • Provides historical insight: It offers an overview of drug use over a time span, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapacity to identify recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are necessary for drugs to surface in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can alter drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Lake City, IA, hair follicle testing stands out over traditional urine tests due to its superior capabilities. Unlike urine tests, hair testing provides a wider timeframe for substance detection, yielding greater accuracy and reliability. Employers, courts, and others prefer hair tests for their ability to capture long-term substance use, ensuring comprehensive evaluations.

Hair follicle testing in Lake City, IA gives employers an extensive look into an individual’s drug use, detecting substances for up to 90 days. This broad detection window offers a detailed perspective on an employee's long-term substance habits, proving especially beneficial for background checks and ongoing evaluations.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Lake City, IA’s hair follicle tests are inherently more resistant to tampering, ensuring genuine results. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
