In Lehigh, Iowa, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, and we provide testing centers nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other specialized testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the preferred method over recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often choose hair drug tests over urine tests. This method is favored by organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies and by the legal system for those on probation. Its major advantage is the extended detection period of up to 90 days, with an observed collection that is practically tamper-proof. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests are still the preferred choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent method for uncovering substance use, including alcohol. As hair grows, it embeds biomarkers, creating a substantial log of alcohol or drug consumption. Collected near the scalp, it offers a detectable period of up to three months for alcohol and other drugs. The collection process is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, around 200 strands (approximately a #2 pencil's thickness) near the scalp, yields 100mg, an optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation tests. For tests involving EtG, additional panels, or beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. When we refer to head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result consists of four pivotal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the lab system, confirming the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary assessment to identify possible drug usage. Though a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most cases, a positive screening requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that are tentatively positive at this stage necessitate a corroborative test.

Samples with a tentative positive at Screening are re-evaluated in the Extraction phase, where drugs are extracted from hair with a lower concentration compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, explaining the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Pre-confirmation involves washing all presumptively positive samples as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can track drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer shorter detection times.
  • Minimal chance to falsify: Hair drug tests are tough to manipulate, yielding more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: They provide a timeline of drug use, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after ingestion.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other methods of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth patterns can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle tests with traditional urine tests in Lehigh, IA, hair testing consistently demonstrates superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, which are more prone to manipulation, hair tests provide a more permanent solution against tampering. Furthermore, the ability to detect a wide range of substances over more extended periods offers greater insight into an individual's substance history.

  • Longer detection periods
  • Enhanced accuracy
  • Resistance to tampering

Extended Detection Window

In Lehigh, IA, one of the standout features of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window, capable of identifying drug use for up to 90 days. This extended period provides employers with a more comprehensive picture of an individual's substance use patterns, which is invaluable during the hiring process. Hair testing allows for informed decisions based on a fuller understanding of a person's past behavior.

  • 90-day detection capability
  • Comprehensive substance history
  • Valuable for hiring decisions

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Lehigh, IA, presents a tamper-resistant method for drug detection, significantly reducing the risks associated with sample adulteration. This reliability ensures that results remain unquestionable, providing peace of mind to employers and legal entities alike. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
