Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lohrville, Iowa. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert in hair testing. Our centers nationwide can administer hair tests. Hair samples should be 1.5 to 2 inches long from the crown or other body parts. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored testing solutions.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for drug screening. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals require hair tests over the traditional urine tests. Used by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probations, the main advantage of hair follicle testing is the extended detection period, lasting up to 90 days, using an observed process, and being nearly impossible to manipulate. For recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. Hair collected close to the scalp can provide a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp supplies 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and validation. In the case of EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair cannot be gathered, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. When scalp hair is mentioned, it is specific to head hair. Body hair includes any other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The stage of Accessioning deals with the primary processing of a sample into a lab’s system, ensuring proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid analysis for drugs of abuse. Although Screening can efficiently rule out drug use for most samples, if the screen is positive, it must be confirmed for legal admissibility. All samples found presumptively positive in Screening require a confirmation step.

Should a sample be presumptively positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. At this stage, much lower concentrations of drugs are extracted from hair than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation for any positive screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • High accuracy: Cheating a hair drug test is notably hard, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides usage patterns: It can display a trend of drug use over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days post-use to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests," the actual test evaluates the hair strand, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why choose hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests in Lohrville, IA? The benefits are clear: superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair testing offers a longer detection window and is less prone to tampering. Where urine tests might miss recent drug use, hair tests provide a comprehensive view of drug and alcohol usage frequency, ensuring businesses maintain their drug-free policies effectively.

Extended Detection Window

In Lohrville, IA, hair follicle testing provides an extended detection window, capable of revealing substance use over a remarkable 90-day span. This long-term detection capability delivers employers a complete and historical substance profile, helping in evaluating the patterns and behavior associated with drug and alcohol use. It's an insightful tool for making informed decisions in hiring or ongoing employee assessment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Lohrville, IA provide a tamper-resistant method for drug testing. Unlike urine tests, hair samples are difficult to adulterate, and the collection process is less intrusive, reducing the potential for manipulation. This ensures the integrity and reliability of the results, giving stakeholders the assurance of an unquestionable drug testing outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
