Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Luzerne, Iowa. Need a hair drug or alcohol test? Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing, with centers in all cities Nationwide to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent times, using hair follicle drug tests for drug screening has become more common. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. These tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and for individuals on probation. The key advantage of hair follicle drug tests is their extended drug detection window, up to 90 days, and their observed collection makes cheating nearly impossible. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive account of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within its forming strands. When cut near the scalp, hair offers an approximate 3-month period of detection for these substances. Collecting it is straightforward, infrequently tampered with, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (resembling a #2 pencil in thickness) near the scalp yields 100mg, the perfect amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. It's advisable to measure the hair using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be available, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. When referring to head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four core steps in the lab processing for a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample enters the lab’s database. This step includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning it a randomly generated LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling out any extra data not included by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening entails a preliminary quick scan to detect drug use. This cost-efficient method rules out drug use in most cases, but a positive result necessitates further confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples flagged as potentially positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid testing), illustrating why hair drug tests are the most complex to execute.

Positive screening results are validated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The full lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Complexity in manipulation: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insight: Offers a trend of drug use over time, unlike reflecting just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It generally takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing tends to be pricier compared to alternate testing approaches.
  • Result variation: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth patterns can impact the detected concentration of drug remnants.

Note: Even though often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the assessment examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
