Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Mallard, Iowa. Specializing in hair tests for drugs and alcohol, we provide testing locations in cities across the nation. Generally, a sample requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Hair tests can be customized to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other substances.
In recent times, the preference for drug testing methods has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle drug tests. Courts, employers, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair drug tests over urine tests. These follicle tests gain popularity among employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation. Their key advantage is the ability to detect drug use over an extended period of approximately 90 days. Although urine tests remain most effective for recent drug use within five days, hair tests provide an observation-based collection that is nearly impossible to manipulate.

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can encapsulate a continuous record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period for alcohol and other drugs of up to roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat tamper-resistant, and easily transportable.
A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands, approximately equal in thickness to a #2 pencil, taken nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. We advocate measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to any other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).
Process Overview
The laboratory analysis of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning refers to the initial entry of a sample into a lab’s database. This process ensures the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.
Screening involves a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening provides a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation to be legally admissible. Hence, any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation.
Should a sample show a presumptive positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations significantly lower than other methods (like urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to execute.
Confirmation of any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and the accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the actual test analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp
