Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle tests in Marcus, Iowa. If you require a drug or alcohol examination using hair samples, we are experts in this area and have facilities throughout the United States capable of conducting these assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Our analysis can detect drugs, ETG/alcohol, or other tailored hair testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly common for marijuana detection. Employers, the judicial system, and addiction specialists often opt for this method over the traditional urine test. Companies with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal bodies, and those on probation frequently utilize hair tests. The main advantage is longer detection of drug use, reaching up to 90 days. This observed test method is difficult to tamper with. However, for drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a powerful method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug presence by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When sourced from near the scalp, hair can provide approximately a three-month detection window for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing around 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, it is advised to use 150mg of the sample. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equal quantity of body hair may be taken. When mentioning head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample within the laboratory’s system. This process involves confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for illicit drugs. While it is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screening must be confirmed to be legally acceptable in court. Any samples that are tentatively positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test tentatively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing an intricate procedure.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can detect substances for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have shorter timeframes.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair tests are significantly harder to cheat, making results more reliable.
  • Provides usage history: It helps track drug use patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost considerations: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact metabolite concentrations.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
