Accredited Drug Testing presents comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Marquette, Iowa. Specializing in hair testing for drugs and alcohol, we operate multiple centers across the nation that can conduct a hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored hair testing solutions.

Drug testing in recent times has increasingly relied on hair follicle testing. An increasing number of employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Ideal for employers implementing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation cases, hair tests offer a longer detection timeline, usually up to 90 days. This observed process makes cheating nearly impossible, yet urine tests remain most accurate for recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Seen as a robust tool, hair testing aids in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers, offering a long-term record of substance use by embedding them within the growing fibers. Harvested near the scalp, hair has the potential to display a detection period of approximately three months for alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, it resists adulteration, and it’s simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or when tests exceed 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. Should scalp hair be unavailable, equivalent body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning focuses on the sample’s initial integration into the laboratory’s system. This phase includes confirming the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any extra data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a budget-friendly approach to eliminate drug usage across most samples, a positive outcome must be corroborated for court admittance. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. During this step, drugs are separated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive specimen undergoes washing before confirmation, as necessary. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use extending to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter time frames.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are difficult to tamper with, boosting the validity of results.
  • Pathway of past use: They offer a timeline of drug use over time, rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting instant use: There’s about a 5-7 day lag before drugs are traceable in hair.
  • Expense:Hair drug testing tends to cost more compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result disparities: Factors such as hair pigment and individual differences in growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the testing involves examining the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Choosing hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests in Marquette, IA, offers significant benefits. Hair tests deliver superior detection accuracy and reliability, effectively identifying substance use over extended periods. Compared to standard urine tests which detect drug use within the recent past, hair tests provide a broader detection window, making them a preferred choice for ensuring compliance and safety.

Employers in Marquette can benefit substantially from hair tests because of their reduced susceptibility to tampering. Unlike urine tests, which can be compromised, hair testing stands as a reliable, robust method for detecting substances, enhancing the credibility of the testing process.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Marquette, IA, can trace drug use up to 90 days back. This provides a sweeping view of an individual's substance history, offering employers an extensive understanding of their applicants' or employees' past use. Such a timeframe is crucial for maintaining workplace environments that prioritize safety and productivity.

This long detection period helps uncover recurrent patterns in substance use, allowing employers in Marquette to make informed decisions based on comprehensive data. Hair testing's capability to detect long-term drug use outshines other methods that only reflect recent consumption, making it indispensable for thorough screening processes.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Marquette, IA, stands strong against adulteration, presenting a tamper-resistant approach to drug detection. Unlike other tests that are vulnerable to manipulation, the hair test remains largely immune to such possibilities, ensuring that the results are reliable and trustworthy. This safeguards the integrity of the process, from sample collection to results interpretation.

By being resistant to typical tampering methods, hair follicle testing provides peace of mind to employers by boosting the test's credibility. It effectively eliminates the risk of altered results, making it a dependable option for those who cannot compromise on test accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
