In Martelle, Iowa, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. If you're in need of a hair substance test, our expertise focuses on hair assessments, and we have facilities throughout the nation that are equipped to execute them. Typically, testing requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body parts. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

Recently, the preference for drug testing methods has leaned towards hair follicle tests. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse counselors increasingly favor hair testing over traditional urine tests. This method is adopted by entities with strict no-drug policies and those on probation. Hair testing's key advantage is its extended detection window of about 90 days, conducted under observation, making tampering nearly unfeasible. Conversely, for recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become a widely recognized method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, offering an extended history of substance use. When gathered near the scalp, hair can provide roughly a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair samples are easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimum quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and those above 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is preferable. We advise using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair covers all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The essential stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary phase where a sample is processed into the laboratory's system. This step includes checking that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial swift check for drug abuse. Although a cost-efficient method for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive screening result must be verified for legal admissibility. Presumptively positive samples in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Any positive screening result is confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptive positive undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is carried out under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Lengthy detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that detect a shorter window of usage.
  • Difficult to tamper: Hair drug tests are highly resistant to tampering, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Shows usage history: Provides a timeline of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days before drugs are traceable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests generally cost more compared to other testing methods.
  • Variable outcomes: Variables like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often referred to as "hair follicle tests", these tests actually examine the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle drug tests prove superior to urine tests, especially in Martelle, IA. While urine tests offer immediate detection, hair sampling provides a broader window of assessment, capturing up to 90 days of drug use. This ensures a thorough understanding of an individual's substance consumption history, making it the preferred choice for employers and legal entities.

The reliability and accuracy of hair testing are unmatched. Unlike urine tests, which have a brief detection window, hair tests in Martelle consistently detect longer-term drug use. This accuracy ensures fair and comprehensive evaluations, proving invaluable for employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Martelle, IA, benefit greatly from hair follicle testing's extended detection window. Capable of identifying substance use over a 90-day period, this method provides a detailed view of an employee's drug history. Such a comprehensive window surpasses the limited timeframe of urine tests, presenting a robust tool for consistent workplace monitoring.

The prolonged detection capability of hair follicle tests offers unparalleled insight into an individual's drug use. In Martelle, businesses can gain a broader perspective of their workforce's history, ensuring that they maintain a compliant and safe work environment. This longer window deters recurring drug use.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Martelle, IA, hair follicle tests serve as a tamper-resistant drug screening method, significantly reducing sample manipulation risks. Unlike other testing methods susceptible to deceit, hair analyses provide reliable and indisputable results, making them a trustworthy choice for employers and legal authorities seeking authentic assessments.

The robustness of hair follicle testing lies in its resistance to tampering. Through a meticulous collection process, Martelle ensures the integrity of samples, resulting in unquestionable results. This reliability makes it the go-to option for organizations that require steadfast and uncompromised evaluations.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
