Offering thorough hair follicle drug tests in Massena, Iowa, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to specialist. If you're looking for a reliable hair drug or alcohol test, our nationwide centers provide expertise in hair testing. Generally, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body allows us to conduct tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

More organizations, courts, and substance abuse experts now turn to hair follicle tests over standard urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers benefit from this test as it detects drug use for up to 90 days. It's nearly uncheatable and observed during collection. Yet, the urine test still leads in detecting recent (within 5 days) drug use accurately.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for the identification of alcohol and drug consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the strands of developing hair, it offers an extended timeline of usage. Once gathered near the scalp, the hair can offer a detection timeline of up to roughly three months for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with about 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample weighing 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent portion of body hair may be taken. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test outcome consists of four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a specimen into the laboratory’s system. This step includes confirming the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any additional data input not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. Even though Screening is an affordable approach to exclude drug consumption in most samples, a positive Screening result requires confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples that indicate a positive in the Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation process.

If a specimen shows a positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. During Extraction, chemicals are drawn from hair at much lower densities compared to other methods (such as urine or saliva), making hair drug testing one of the hardest methodologies to execute.

Confirmation for any preliminary positive findings is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are initially positive undergo a washing process before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory progression from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug examinations can identify substance use for a duration of up to 90 days, compared to urine exams which have a briefer detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug examination is exceedingly challenging, ensuring result accuracy.
  • Offers historical pattern: It can depict a drug usage trend over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: Approximately 5-7 days are needed before substances are noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations generally cost more than other drug analysis methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair hue and personal differences in hair development can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Often referred to as “hair follicle examinations,” the assessment is done on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
