In Maysville, Iowa, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Our centers, spread across all cities nationwide, expertly handle hair tests for drugs and alcohol, including ETG among various tailored hair testing choices. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body, these tests offer a reliable assessment.

The shift towards hair follicle testing for drugs has grown more common in recent years. Employers with strict drug-free policies, court systems, and substance abuse professionals often prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. This is due to the hair test's extended detection period of up to 90 days and the difficulty of tampering. However, for detecting recent use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is acknowledged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a timeline of substances through the capture of biomarkers within the hair's structure. When collected from near the scalp, it can offer up to a 3-month detection period for substances. The process of collecting hair samples is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 hair strands (roughly similar to a #2 pencil in size) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, additional screenings, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for precise specimen measurement. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. By "head hair," we specifically mean scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the initial processing of a sample into a lab’s database. This step involves ensuring proper sample sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data recording not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial assessment for drugs of abuse. Although it is a cost-efficient approach to rule out drug consumption in most cases, a positive result requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Presumptively positive samples from Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positive results during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at much thinner concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing particularly challenging.

Confirmation for any positive result in Screening is done utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests cover a shorter period.
  • Challenging to falsify: It's extremely difficult to manipulate hair test results, enhancing accuracy.
  • Tracks historical drug use: It reveals a pattern of substance use over time, unlike recent use detection.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become noticeable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur a higher cost compared to other testing methods.
  • Result inconsistencies: Variables such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
