Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Mona, Iowa. Specializing in hair tests for drugs and alcohol, our national network of centers can assist you. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests are available for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific configurations.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in recent times, frequently replacing traditional urine tests for employers, courts, and substance abuse experts. A key advantage is its longer detection span, lasting up to 90 days, ensuring reliable results. Despite this, urine tests remain more accurate for recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Analyzing hair samples is increasingly acknowledged as an effective method to uncover drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a chronicling source for detecting substances by securing biomarkers within the strands during growth. When procured from near the scalp, hair can offer around a three-month window for identifying drugs and alcohol. The collection of hair is straightforward, notably resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample amount for tests and confirmations. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair be lacking, an equivalent volume of body hair may be sourced. The term 'head hair' indicates scalp hair solely, whereas 'body hair' pertains to all remaining types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test result in a lab comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The Accessioning phase handles the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s workflow. It involves verifying that the sample's seal and shipping were intact, allocating it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input omitted from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial, rapid check to spot drug misuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to eliminate drug usage across most samples, any positive outcomes require verification for legal acceptability. Samples with presumptive positive results from Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a presumptive positive arises during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for the Extraction phase, where drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid)—a reason why hair drug testing presents complexities.

To confirm any positive results from Screening, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are utilized. Any samples with presumptive positives undergo washing as part of the confirmation process. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, surpassing the shorter period seen in urine tests.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Yields historical usage patterns: It discloses drug usage trends over prolonged durations, not just brief instances.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection for recent usage: Drugs become noticeable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing forms.
  • Inconsistent results: Variabilities such as hair color and unique growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed “hair follicle tests,” the examination actually involves the hair strand, not the subscalp follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
