Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Monroe, Iowa. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our expertise in hair testing, complemented by our extensive Nationwide testing centers, ensures we can facilitate the test in any city. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate other specific testing needs.

Recently, the popularity of hair follicle drug tests has increased for substance detection. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair tests instead of traditional urine tests. These tests serve organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, as well as courts and those on probation. Hair follicle testing offers a longer detection window of up to 90 days, a supervised collection process, and it's nearly tamper-proof. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within five days, the urine test remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers a lengthy record of substance intake by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When taken close to the scalp, it can provide a detection period of up to around 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to modify, and straightforward to ship.

A 1.5-inch piece of about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests over 10 panels, 150mg of the hair specimen is suggested. We advise weighing the hair specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair may be taken. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process involves four main stages in lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary processing of a sample within a laboratory's system. This step includes confirming the sample's seal and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick test for drug detection. While Screening is a cost-effective means to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen result requires confirmation to hold up in court. Any samples presumptively positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a notably lower concentration than in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as required. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Hair designation and in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenge to tamper: Hair drug tests are hard to cheat, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Historical use pattern: It provides an overview of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Insufficient for recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strands, not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Monroe, IA, hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over urine tests, primarily with its extended detection period. Unlike urine tests, which cover a shorter usage timeline, hair tests provide a broader picture of an individual's substance use history.

Superior detection capabilities mean hair tests can uncover drug usage up to 90 days, compared to the limited window of urine testing, rendering it a more reliable option for long-term substance use assessment.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Monroe, IA, gives employers a far-reaching overview of a person's substance use history. Spanning a checking period of up to 90 days, these tests can reveal patterns of use that shorter-term tests might miss.

This broader window enables better informed decisions regarding employment and compliance, supporting sustained workplace effectiveness and safety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Monroe, IA, is naturally tamper-resistant, drastically reducing the opportunity for sample adulteration. Collectors observe and manage the process, ensuring integrity and that results withstand scrutiny.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
