Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair drug assessments in Murray, Iowa. Our specialty lies in hair drug and alcohol testing, with centers nationwide. Having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head is usually necessary, but body hair may also be used. We offer options to test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized needs.

Lately, drug tests increasingly use hair follicles. More employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair tests over urine tests. Hair tests are favored for zero-tolerance policies, court orders, or probation. The key advantage is a detection span up to 90 days, with a supervised collection, making it nearly cheat-proof. Yet, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is considered a potent approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a long-term record of drug and alcohol intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands during growth. When procured near the scalp, it can reveal alcohol and drug usage over roughly a 3-month span. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to falsify, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's thickness) near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for initial testing and subsequent verification. For EtG supplements and/or assays beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be submitted. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, while "body hair" refers to all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal stages in laboratory drug test processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab’s system. This phase ensures that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any pending data input not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial scan for abusive substances. Although Screening is cost-efficient for initially ruling out drug use in most samples, positive results from Screening must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples preliminarily positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples preliminarily positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial batch for the Extraction process. Drugs are extracted at lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most complex method to conduct.

Any positive result from Screening is validated using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. All samples indicated as positive preliminarily are cleansed before confirmation if required. The comprehensive lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is inspected under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug analyses can track drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have restricted detection periods.
  • Challenging to deceive: Altering a hair drug test is considerably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insights: It offers a record of drug use over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Drugs only become detectable in hair after around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug screening tends to be pricier than alternative testing modes.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and growth rate can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle itself beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
