Located in New Hartford, Iowa, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive drug screening through hair follicle tests. Whether your requirement is for detecting drugs or alcohol through hair tests, our expertise and nationwide centers are at your service. To conduct a test, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body is generally needed. Our tests can screen for drugs, ETG/alcohol, or customized analysis options.

Recently, the inclusion of hair follicle drug testing has grown in popularity for drug detection. Employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse specialists often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies along with courts and probation officers find these tests beneficial. The major advantage lies in its lengthy detection period of up to 90 days and its resistance to manipulation, though urine tests remain accurate for use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair strands encapsulate biomarkers within their fibers, offering a comprehensive history of substance use over time. By collecting hair close to the scalp, a detection timeframe of around three months for drugs and alcohol is achievable. Collecting hair is straightforward, it's relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, with approximately 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near to the scalp, yields the perfect 100mg sample necessary for both screening and confirmation procedures. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, it's advisable to collect 150mg of the sample. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair can't be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair is an alternative. When we refer to head hair, it specifically means scalp hair, while body hair includes other hair types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

In a laboratory setting, the four crucial phases for processing drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the fundamental processing of a sample within a lab's system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, allocates a random Lab Accessioning Number (LAN), and covers any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial, rapid assessment for the presence of drugs. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive results obtained in this stage must be verified to hold up in legal settings. Samples indicating a presumptive positive during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial collection for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are isolated from the hair at a much lower concentration level compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Before confirmation, all samples flagged as presumptive positives are washed as needed. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to tamper: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Historical insight: Offers an overview of drug usage trends over time, not just immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs need approximately 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Aspects such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
