Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Olin, Iowa. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, we specialize in hair analysis, with centers across all cities nationwide capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body may be required. Hair analyses can be detailed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

In recent years, conducting drug assessments frequently involves hair follicle tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now demand these over traditional urine evaluations. Hair follicle tests are favored by zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and individuals under probation. The chief advantage is its extended detection range up to 90 days, collected through observed methods, making it nearly tamper-proof. Yet, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term patterns of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the hair fibers. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A sample of 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirming. For EtG testing, additional tests, and/or screens beyond 10 panels, it's advised to use 150mg of hair. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses different types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory process for a drug test result consists of four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the laboratory system. This phase ensures the correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary detection of drugs of abuse. Although Screening efficiently identifies drug usage in most samples, positive results must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples showing presumptive positives during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to methods like urine or oral fluid testing, making hair drug screening a challenging methodology.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are utilized for confirming any positive screening results. Before confirmation, all samples showing presumptive positives undergo necessary washing. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the whole lab process is rigorously reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: The accuracy of hair drug tests is augmented by the difficulty in tampering with results.
  • Provides historical data: Offers an overview of drug usage patterns over time rather than capturing only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug testing incurs higher costs than alternative methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
