Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing in Oneida, Iowa. If you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, we're experts in hair analysis, with centers nationwide ready to conduct tests. Typically, hair from the scalp or body around 1.5 to 2 inches long is sufficient for testing. Our assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to your specific needs.
In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a prevalent method for substance detection. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts are increasingly opting for hair tests over conventional urine tests. Hair testing serves organizations with strict no-drug policies, judicial bodies, and those on probation. The main advantage of hair tests is a longer detection period, up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it difficult to falsify. However, for recent drug use within a five-day window, urine testing remains the most precise option.

When you're searching for hair drug testing near me or hair drug testing locations, we provide a simple and convenient process to find a drug and alcohol testing location near you that is certified to provide all of your drug and alcohol testing needs.
Hair testing is increasingly being recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the developing hair strand. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can offer up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.
A 1.5-inch sample consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair isn't obtainable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).
Process Overview
The laboratory process for a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning entails the initial processing of a sample into a laboratory system. It includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any additional data not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.
Screening is a preliminary quick check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method for ruling out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for it to be admissible in court. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.
If a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. In this process, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to administer.
Confirmation of any positive screening results is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive are washed before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

It served as a prominent platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration, facilitating groundbreaking advancements in hair testing and analysis. In this special issue of Drug Testing and Analysis, we aim to showcase the remarkable manuscripts presented at this significant event, shedding light on the latest research and highlighting the future directions in this field.
Novel Analytical Techniques: The Verona meeting witnessed the unveiling of cutting-edge analytical techniques, offering enhanced sensitivity, selectivity, and accuracy for drug testing. Remarkable advancements in sample preparation, detection, and identification of drug compounds have been presented. The manuscripts in this section presented novel approaches, such as multianalyte methods and on-line preparation which can enable rapid analysis and improve thorough forensic investigations.
Biomarkers and Pharmacokinetics: The identification and validation of reliable biomarkers and pharmacokinetic studies are fundamental aspects of drug testing and analysis. The impact of hair treatments on the oxidation/decomposition of drugs in hair was also explored, as the long-term fate of drugs incorporated in the keratin matrix. Furthermore, the SoHT meeting in Verona featured research on the identification and quantification of alcohol abuse biomarkers, their stability, and their correlation with exposure and other biomarkers.
Forensic Applications and Interpretation: One of the vital objectives of hair testing is its application in forensic investigations and legal proceedings. The SoHT meeting in Verona emphasized the significance of rigorous interpretation of analytical results and the need for standardized protocols. Manuscripts in this section present advancements in forensic toxicology, and have explored the challenges posed by emerging designer drugs and strategies to combat their proliferation. The pitfalls encountered when the exogenous/endogenous nature of a substance is questioned were presented and discussed. The special issue presents also manuscripts that delve into the ethical implications of drug testing in drug facilitated sexual assaults.
Clinical Applications of hair testing are witnessed by the insight on environmental tobacco smoke exposure, assessed by hair analysis in a population of students and the study of in utero-exposure to drugs of abuse through neonatal hair analysis. Exposure to drugs was also important in cases of child abuse/neglect, when the clinical purpose of hair testing merge with its forensic applications.
The legal framework surrounding hair testing and the achievement of guidelines to ensure fairness, accuracy, and confidentiality in drug testing practices have also been discussed, and the SoHT consensus on general hair testing and testing for drugs of abuse was presented at the meeting and published as a Letter to the Editor.
