Accredited Drug Testing adeptly offers hair follicle drug testing options in Onslow, Iowa. For individuals needing hair drug or alcohol testing, our expertise lies in hair testing, supported by our nationwide testing centers. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is sufficient for testing. We offer drug, alcohol/ETG analysis, and other specialized hair testing solutions.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for drug testing. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse consultants now prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. This type of testing is employed by organizations with zero-tolerance policies, legal entities, and individuals on probation due to its ability to detect drug use over an extended period, usually up to 90 days. This test is conducted under observation, reducing the chance of tampering. However, urine tests offer higher accuracy for drug usage within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected from near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches in length, with approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp, weighs 100mg, which is considered the optimal sample for testing and verification. For EtG, extra tests, and/or beyond 10-panel tests, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. In cases where scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. By "head hair," we specifically mean scalp hair, whereas "body hair" applies to any other types (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Summary

There are four key steps in processing a drug test result in a laboratory: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing to enter the lab's system. This process involves verifying proper sealing and shipment of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary test to check for the presence of drugs. While cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen needs to be confirmed for legal validity. Any samples presumed positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If Screening indicates a positive result, additional hair from the original sample is prepared for Extraction. This phase involves drug retrieval from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), highlighting why hair drug testing is complex to conduct.

The Confirmation step for any positive screen is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo a washing process. Every stage of lab processing, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accredited according to ISO/IEC 17025.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests have the ability to identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, which enhances reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Disadvantages:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Drug metabolite concentrations in the hair can be influenced by hair color and individual growth differences.

Note: The test often called "hair follicle test" actually analyzes the strand of hair and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
