In Osterdock, Iowa, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair analysis, we have centers nationwide, including Osterdock, enabling you to undergo hair or alcohol tests. Typically, hair samples require 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body, if necessary. This testing can cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Over the past years, the prevalence of hair follicle drug tests has increased. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists increasingly opt for hair tests over traditional urine analyses. They suit zero-tolerance workplaces, legal evaluations, and probation monitoring due to their longer drug-use detection window, roughly 90 days. Collecting hair samples in a monitored setting hinders tampering, though urine tests remain precise for recent (5-day) consumption.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective approach to detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a prolonged timeline of substance use by encasing biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection window of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Sampling hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 hair strands (roughly comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional requests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it's best to have 150mg of the sample. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory process for analyzing a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial placement of a sample into a laboratory system. This step involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in judicial settings. Any samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, further hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. This stage involves extracting substances from hair at significantly lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcomes is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptive positive undergo washing prior to confirmation if required. The full laboratory pathway from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests feature a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Altering the results of a hair drug test is very difficult, thereby enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a usage trend of drugs over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs generally become traceable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Cost factor: Hair drug tests are often pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result fluctuation: Attributes like hair color and individual differences in hair regrowth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand, not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to urine tests in Osterdock, IA, the former demonstrates superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests provide a longer detection window, ensuring more comprehensive results. Unlike urine tests, which cover shorter periods, hair testing offers thorough insights into substance habits, helping stakeholders make informed decisions while maintaining high standards of accuracy.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
