At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Otho, Iowa. If you're seeking hair drug or alcohol testing, we are specialists in the field with testing facilities across the country, including all cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol, or other specific substances.

Nowadays, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent for drug testing purposes. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair tests over urine tests. These tests are favored by those enforcing strict zero-tolerance policies or managing probation terms. A significant advantage is their ability to detect drugs up to 90 days, making them highly reliable and almost foolproof, though urine tests remain more precise for recent drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as a potent approach for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives a prolonged history of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers up to a roughly three-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, moderately hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch snippet of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional analysis, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable quantity of body hair may be taken. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab's system. This involves ensuring the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplementary data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient means to dismiss drug usage on most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening need further validation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at a far lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a smaller detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty in falsifying: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, making the results more reliable.
  • Provides historical insight: It delivers a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: There is a 5-7 day period before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Variations in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand and not the hair follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
