Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Parkersburg, Iowa. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing and maintain testing centers in cities nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. In most instances, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body is sufficient. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other personalized testing choices.

In recent times, drug testing methodologies increasingly incorporate hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals under probation often opt for hair follicle drug tests, benefiting from the extended detection window up to 90 days, an observed collection process, and resistance to tampering. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely acknowledged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Hair samples are easy to obtain, relatively tough to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of around 200 hair strands (approximating a #2 pencil in thickness) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or over 10-panel tests, 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" denotes only scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The steps involved in laboratory assessment of drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially processing a sample within a lab's system. This process checks that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data recording not covered by an electronic custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While screening is a budget-friendly approach for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation for legal validity. Any samples with a presumptive positive outcome in the screening phase require further confirmation.

On encountering a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening more challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary before confirmation. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeline.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows usage patterns: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternative drug testing options.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
