Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Parnell, Iowa. If you require drug or alcohol testing via hair analysis, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we boast testing facilities across all Nationwide cities to cater to your needs. Possessing 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is essential and feasible for most situations. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing services.

In recent times, utilizing hair follicle tests for drug screening has become more commonplace. A growing number of employers, legal courts, and Substance Abuse experts mandate a hair drug test over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with stringent drug-free workplace policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. A main advantage of this method is its extended drug detection duration, typically extending to 90 days, collected under supervised conditions, minimizing tampering risks. Nevertheless, when assessing substances taken within the past 5 days, urine tests continue to hold accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The composition of hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within its fibers. When hair is extracted near the scalp, it can exhibit a detection period of up to roughly three months for both alcohol and other substances. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and easy to mail.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable in thickness to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal specimen for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to obtain 150mg of the sample. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to determine the specimen's weight. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent mass of body hair may be retrieved. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures for analyzing a drug test result are comprised of four pivotal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This phase includes ensuring the sample's seal and correct shipment, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and providing any data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary quick inspection for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result necessitates validation to be legally credible. Any samples that yield a presumptively positive result in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is selected from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair in significantly less concentration compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine assessments which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to bypass: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: This method can outline a pattern of drug usage over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapacity to detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become visible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result discrepancies: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Parnell, IA
Hair follicle testing offers superior detection capabilities compared to traditional urine tests. While urine tests are effective for recent substance use, hair tests provide a longer detection window and are more resistant to adulteration. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
