Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Peterson, Iowa. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing with centers across all cities throughout the nation to administer these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair tests offer analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests serve employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal entities, and individuals on probation. The key advantage is an extended detection window, lasting up to 90 days, with observation during collection, making it nearly impossible to evade. However, urine tests remain more precise for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now known as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of drugs and alcohol presence by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the hair as it grows. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use within an approximate three-month period. It's easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to a #2 pencil's thickness) near the scalp, provides 100mg, the optimal quantity for tests and verifications. For EtG, supplementary checks, and examinations beyond ten panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. For precise measurements, use a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers specifically to the scalp variety, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test in the lab consists of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the phase where a sample is initially logged into the laboratory's operations. This step ensures that the sample was correctly secured and transported, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data that the electronic chain of custody system didn’t include.

Screening serves as a preliminary test for drug substances. While it is a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug presence in most samples, confirming a positive result is required for legal proceedings. Suspected positive samples in Screening require subsequent validation.

Should a sample indicate a potential positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted and readied for the Extraction phase. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at much lower levels than other testing methods (such as urine or saliva), which is what makes hair drug screening a challenging technique.

Any presumed positive from the screening is validated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All such samples are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The full procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can spotlight drug use over a duration of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have limited detection periods.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It's notably difficult to falsify a hair drug test, which enhances the credibility of results.
  • Offers usage history: It reveals a timeline of drug usage, encompassing more than just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically more costly than other testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination actually targets the hair strand rather than the root beneath the skin

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Peterson, IA When comparing hair follicle tests to traditional urine tests, the advantages become clear. Hair tests provide superior detection accuracy and are far more reliable over time. While urine tests may only capture recent drug use, hair tests can unveil a longer history of substance use, offering a more comprehensive view of an individual's habits.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Peterson, IA Hair follicle testing offers an extensive detection period, reaching back up to 90 days. This broader window allows employers a thorough understanding of an applicant or employee's drug history. Unlike urine tests, which may only reflect recent substance use, hair testing provides a deeper insight into past behaviors.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
