Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug test services in Pierson, Iowa. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, we operate centers nationwide for your convenience. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body are needed. Our tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom substances upon request.

Hair follicle drug tests have risen in popularity with employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals as a superior option to standard urine tests. These tests are favored by entities adhering to strict drug-free mandates due to their extensive detection period—up to 90 days—collected under direct supervision, ensuring difficulty in tampering. Urine tests meanwhile remain most effective within the initial 5-day usage window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the fibers of a growing hair strand, hair offers a comprehensive historical record of alcohol and drug use. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of approximately three months for substances. The collection process is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands close to the scalp is needed to acquire 100mg of hair, which represents the optimal sample size for screening and confirmatory tests. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample weighing 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested for weighing the specimen. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be sourced. The term "head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the laboratory analysis of drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial processing of a specimen into a lab’s system. This step ensures that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for the presence of drugs. This economical approach allows the exclusion of drug usage in most samples; however, any sample with a positive screen requires confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples identified as presumptive positives in Screening need secondary confirmation.

For samples deemed positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at substantially lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to hair drug testing's complexity.

Verification of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Prior to confirmation, all indicative positive samples undergo washing as necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can trace drug use for 90 days compared to urine tests with a shorter detection range.
  • Challenging to adulterate: Hair tests are notably hard to manipulate, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Historical usage information: Offers a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: Drugs require around 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Pierson, IA
Hair testing outperforms conventional urine tests by offering a more comprehensive and accurate analysis of substance use. With its extended detection time, reliability, and difficult-to-deceive procedure, hair follicle tests deliver superior results, making them an ideal choice for stricter monitoring needs.

Compared to urine tests, which capture recent use effectively, hair testing provides a longer look-back period, often proving more insightful and dependable for evaluating patterns of substance use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
