Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing for drugs in Pleasantville, Iowa. If a hair drug or alcohol assessment is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this methodology, with facilities in every city nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the head or body. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other hair testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a favored method for drug detection. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals increasingly prefer these tests over traditional urine analyses. Prescribed by employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation services, hair tests extend the drug detection timeframe up to 90 days, using a monitored collection process that is virtually impenetrable to tampering. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the preferred choice for detecting very recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol abuse. Hair provides a long-term record of alcohol and other drug usage by retaining biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected close to the scalp, it can offer a detection span of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of about 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, it is solely in reference to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This encompasses verifying that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary quick analysis for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in a legal context. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening need secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a substantially lower concentration than within other approaches (ex. urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to manipulate: It is extremely challenging to cheat a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can provide a pattern of drug use over a time span, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Factors including hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Pleasantville, IA, the superiority of hair follicle testing over traditional urine testing is increasingly evident. Hair tests exhibit enhanced detection accuracy and reliability, providing a robust barrier against drug misuse and policy violations. While urine tests are limited in their detection window, hair analysis unveils a broader history of substance use, granting employers and entities a deeper insight into individuals' behaviors.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle tests in Pleasantville, IA proves invaluable for employers. Unlike urine tests, hair sampling can reveal substance use spanning up to 90 days. This long-term monitoring capability offers a thorough understanding of an individual's substance habits, fostering informed hiring or retention decisions and supporting efforts to maintain a drug-free work environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The integrity of hair follicle testing in Pleasantville, IA is unmatched, providing a tamper-resistant method that assures employers of reliable results. The difficulty involved in adulterating hair samples results in highly dependable outcomes, reducing the risk of falsification and guaranteeing trustworthy detection of drugs, which is essential in environments where safety and honesty are non-negotiable.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
