Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Plover, Iowa. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol via hair analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert in this area, with facilities nationwide ready to administer such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is necessary. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to other specific requirements.

Recently, hair follicle tests have gained prominence over other drug tests. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly favor hair analysis over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by employers with strict drug-free policies, judiciary bodies, and probationary programs. The advantage of hair follicle testing lies in its extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, involving a monitored sample collection that is nearly immune to tampering. However, for recent drug use detection within five days, urine tests are still preferred for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying the usage of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug exposure by capturing biomarkers within the strands of the hair as it grows. When cut near the scalp, hair can yield around a 3-month period of detection for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to send.

An amount of 1.5-inch hair comprising about 200 strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp results in 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for assessment and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is advised. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. "Scalp hair" refers only to hair on the head. "Body hair" encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The central phases in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial inclusion of a sample into the lab’s system. It involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing other data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples; however, a positive screen must be verified for court admissibility. Any samples that test presumptive positive in Screening require follow-up confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive result in Screening, more hair is used from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is one of the most complex techniques to carry out.

Confirmation for any positive screening is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification as well as the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Displays usage history: It can illustrate a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot ascertain recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
