Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Popejoy, Iowa. For individuals in need of a hair test for drugs or alcohol, we specialize in this method and provide testing centers nationwide, inclusive of all cities. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp is sufficient, but body hair can be used too. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

In recent years, the demand for hair follicle drug tests has surged. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts favor them over traditional urine tests. Employers implementing a zero-tolerance drug use policy, legal systems, and individuals under probation increasingly opt for hair tests. Their primary advantage is a detection window of up to 90 days, ensuring a robust collection with low chances of evasion. That said, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests are still preferred.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a valuable instrument for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair holds a prolonged record of alcohol and substances by capturing biomarkers within the developing hair strand's fibers. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest weighing the specimen with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unmatched, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When addressing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair alludes to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages involved in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial handling of a sample within a lab's system. This encompasses confirming that the sample was sealed and transported properly, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary prompt check for substances of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use on most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be permissible in legal settings. Any samples that appear positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample registers as presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection range: Hair drug tests can discern drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that have a shorter detection interval.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is exceptionally difficult to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the precision of outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It can showcase a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result fluctuations: Elements like hair color and individual variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Popejoy, IA Hair testing surpasses conventional urine tests due to its heightened detection accuracy and reliability. Urine tests cover a shorter duration, providing limited insights. In contrast, hair tests examine substance use over an extensive timeframe. Their resistance to tampering and higher sensitivity rates make them a preferable choice for those requiring precise, long-term data on user habits, ensuring a comprehensive assessment.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Popejoy, IA One of the hair follicle test's greatest strengths is its elongated detection window, spanning up to 90 days. This offers employers an in-depth understanding of an individual's substance patterns and history. Such prolonged detection periods are invaluable for those needing a broader picture of drug use, capturing consumption cycles effectively and outlining comprehensive behavioral patterns, thus supporting informed decision-making procedures and actions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Popejoy, IA Hair follicle tests substantially lower the risk of adulterated samples, ensuring results remain uncontaminated and trustworthy. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
