Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Raymond, Iowa. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, we excel in hair testing and offer facilities across all cities nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed for analysis. Our hair tests cater to drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for detecting drug use. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists increasingly require these tests instead of traditional urine tests. Used by workplaces with zero-tolerance policies and probation programs, these tests offer an extended detection window of up to 90 days, are collected under supervision, and are nearly impossible to tamper with. For drug use within the past five days, however, urine tests remain the most precise tool.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair fibers can encase biomarkers, offering a detailed historical record of substance use over time. When strands are taken close to the scalp, they can reveal drug and alcohol usage over an estimated 90-day span. Hair collection is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

Securing a 1.5-inch segment, approximately the width of a #2 pencil and consisting of 200 strands, provides around 100mg—the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a sample weight of 150mg is advisable. It's recommended to measure the hair on a precision scale. If head hair isn't an option, a comparable amount of body hair can be obtained. References to head hair strictly mean scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in laboratory analysis of a drug test: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with bringing the specimen into the lab's workflow. This involves verifying proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling additional data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as an initial summary check for the presence of drugs. Though cost-effective in eliminating non-positive samples, a positive result at this stage necessitates confirmation to be valid legally. Any samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening must undergo a confirmatory follow-up.

Upon a presumptive positive in Screening, more strands are extracted from the sample and prepped for Extraction. This step involves isolating drugs from hair, albeit at reduced concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or saliva), highlighting the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Confirmation involves verifying positive results using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive specimens get a thorough cleansing before confirmation. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair analysis extends the window of detection up to 90 days, contrary to shorter spans in urine testing.
  • High integrity: The difficulty in manipulating a hair drug test strengthens result credibility.
  • Chronological usage insight: Offers insight into drug consumption patterns over time, not limited to recent events.

Limitations:

  • Delay in detection: A lag of approximately 5-7 days for drugs to register in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair testing typically incurs higher costs than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Differences like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence metabolite concentrations.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
