Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing available in Renwick, Iowa. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol examination, our expertise in hair testing allows us to offer services across all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed for analysis. This type of testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a preferred method for drug screening, often replacing the traditional urine analysis. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now commonly mandate hair drug tests over standard urine tests. This method benefits zero-tolerance workplaces, judiciary processes, and probation monitoring. Its key advantage is a longer detection period, up to 90 days, coupled with an observed collection process, making it hard to tamper with. However, for detecting substance use in the past 5 days, urine testing remains the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become a vital instrument for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. The hair provides a comprehensive timeline of drug and alcohol use by preserving biomarkers within the expanding hair shaft. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection span of up to around three months for substances. Its collection is straightforward, tampering with it is challenging, and it transports easily.

A 1.5-inch hair sample comprising roughly 200 strands (about the dimensions of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, an optimal quantity for testing and validation. For EtG, additional panels, and/or assessments over 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advocate for the measurement of the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair isn't present, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Four primary phases comprise the lab processing of a drug analysis outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial sample processing into a lab’s database. This process involves confirming the sample was correctly sealed and sent, providing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing information not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening executes a preliminary rapid assessment for drug presence. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude substance use for most samples, a positive result must be corroborated to be valid legally. Samples that show a positive result during Screening necessitate further verification.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. At this stage, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid); hence, hair drug testing is the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as needed. The entire lab protocol from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 certification standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Altering hair drug test results is notably difficult, enhancing their reliability.
  • Delivers chronological insight: This method can illustrate a timeline of drug consumption over a duration, not just recent habits.

Limitations:

  • Inability to confirm recent consumption: Drugs typically become apparent in hair around 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expenses: Hair drug analyses tend to be pricier compared to alternative testing practices.
  • Result discrepancies: Variability in factors such as hair pigmentation and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often labeled as "hair follicle tests", these tests evaluate the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
