Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Riceville, Iowa. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available in cities nationwide where hair tests can be administered. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or the body can be used. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a more common component of drug testing procedures. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair drug testing over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by organizations with strict drug use policies, judiciary systems, and individuals on probation. A significant advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window, spanning up to 90 days and involving an observed collection method, making it difficult to tamper with results. However, for drug use detection within the preceding five days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has emerged as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair during its growth, hair offers an extensive history of alcohol and other substances. When collected near the scalp, it can reveal substance presence for up to an estimated 3-month timeframe. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

An optimal screening and confirmation sample comprises a 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (resembling the size of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp, providing 100mg of hair. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen mass of 150mg is advised. The specimen should ideally be weighed using a jeweler’s scale. If unavailable, body hair may serve as an alternative. References to head hair exclusively pertain to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (including facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures for drug test processing encompass four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails integrating a sample into a lab’s system, verifying proper sealing and transport, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid check for drugs of abuse. Even though Screening offers a cost-effective method to exclude drug use for most samples, positive results require confirmation for courtroom admissibility. Samples showing presumptive positivity during Screening need further confirmation.

For samples that show presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for preparation in the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at substantially lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence the complexity of hair drug screening.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods confirm any positive Screening outcomes. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary before confirmation. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair tests reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Difficult to circumvent: The complexity of cheating on a hair test enhances result accuracy.
  • Tracks historical data: Offers a drug use pattern over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing is typically more costly compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can alter the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", this test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
