Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Riverdale, Iowa. Whether you require a hair drug test or alcohol test, we are skilled in hair testing, with facilities located nationwide. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is required from the crown or body. Hair samples can test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the preferred method in recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often favor this test over traditional urine testing. Hair tests are favored by organizations with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation cases due to their extended detection time of up to 90 days. The test's observed procedure minimizes the potential for tampering. However, urine testing remains the most accurate for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the growing strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide roughly a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 strands of hair (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, and those above 10 panels, a specimen size of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. In this context, head hair refers specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process for a drug test result in the lab includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of processing a sample within a lab's system. This stage verifies the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any needed data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a quick initial test for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in most samples, positive screenings must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted at a significantly lower concentration from hair compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are washed before confirmation if needed. The lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: The complexity of cheating a hair drug test enhances result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It shows a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to show in hair.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
