Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Rock Falls, Iowa. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair analysis, with facilities across all U.S. cities equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body will suffice. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are often favoring hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are sought by employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. The main advantage of such tests is their extended detection period, up to 90 days, with an observed collection process, making them almost inviolable. However, for drug use within the last five days, urine tests are still the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a highly effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use due to its accumulation of biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When hair is collected from the area nearest to the scalp, it can offer a detection window reaching up to about three months for identifying alcohol and drug usage. Collecting hair is uncomplicated, relatively tamper-resistant, and straightforward to transport.

A sample length of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximating the thickness of a standard #2 pencil) from the scalp area will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation tests. For EtG add-ons or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to use 150mg of the specimen. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is unobtainable, a similar volume of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we are exclusively referring to scalp hair. In contrast, body hair pertains to any other types of hair (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four central steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial processing phase where a sample is entered into the laboratory's system. This phase verifies that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial fast check for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method for ruling out drug presence in most samples, any positive result must be confirmed to be valid in legal proceedings. Presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are extracted from the hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other types of samples (such as urine or saliva), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive results is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are cleaned before Confirmation as needed. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to the ISO / IEC 17025 standards for accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests offer detection of drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests, which have a shorter detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is considerably challenging, yielding more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: Hair testing can establish a drug use pattern over extended periods, beyond merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days before becoming detectable in hair samples.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors including hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: The test is frequently called a "hair follicle test," but it actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
