Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Roland, Iowa. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our expertise in hair testing is supported by testing centers across all cities nationwide capable of performing these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body are necessary. Hair tests provide analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customized hair testing solutions.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle drug tests. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals often prefer hair drug testing over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by entities with zero-tolerance drug policies, ensuring a long detection window of drug use, up to 90 days, collected through an observed process, minimizing the chance of manipulation. However, urine tests remain optimal for detecting recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a comprehensive timeline of substance use by sequestering biomarkers within the hairs’ growing fibers. When harvested near the scalp, the hair can reveal alcohol and drug usage for approximately up to three months. Collection is straightforward, modification is challenging, and transport is easy.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, additional elements, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We advocate for the specimen to be weighed using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test outcomes comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary integration of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any remaining data inputs absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for substance misuse. While this is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug presence in most samples, a positive screen requires validation to be permissible in legal proceedings. Any screenings suggesting positivity necessitate further corroboration.

If a sample shows positive indications during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. This stage involves isolating drugs from the hair at a significantly lower concentration than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive screen is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation, as required. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Drug consumption can be identified up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are notably hard to invalidate, enhancing accuracy of results.
  • Historical insight: They provide a timeline of drug use, not just immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to recognize recent consumption: Drugs are generally detectable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Elements like hair color and diverse individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While often named "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

    Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
