In Roseville, Iowa, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. For those seeking hair-based drug or alcohol assessments, we excel in hair testing and have facilities available across all cities nationwide to conduct these tests. At least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is generally required. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other tailored hair testing options.

Recently, the preference for drug testing has leaned towards hair follicle methods. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now opt for these tests instead of traditional urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation frequently use hair follicle testing. The significant advantage is its extended detection window, revealing drug use up to 90 days with observed collection, making it nearly unbeatable for accuracy. Urine tests remain more accurate for detection within the last 5 days of use.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as a formidable means to detect drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When clipped nearest to the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeline of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to obtain, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A snippet measuring 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If no scalp hair is available, a similar amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair refers to other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any supplemental data not provided by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed to be court-admissible. Any samples that test positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

When a sample is deemed positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, substances are removed from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptively positive are cleansed prior to confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can identify drug use up to 90 days prior, in contrast to urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug screenings are challenging to deceive, increasing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers chronological data: It supplies a record of drug usage over time, as opposed to only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: A timeframe of about 5-7 days is needed for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug screenings are pricier compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth affect the concentration of drug metabolites within hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
