Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Sac City, Iowa. If you're seeking a reliable hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this field, with facilities in many U.S. cities providing hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices for testing. Hair analysis can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other specifications.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly favored the hair follicle approach. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer hair tests to standard urine analyses. These hair tests are crucial for employers with strict no-drug-use rules, courts, and those on probation. The main advantage is its extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, collected under observation, which minimizes cheating. However, for drug use in the past 5 days, the urine test remains most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective mechanism for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair fiber. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively tamper-proof, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is suggested. Using a jeweler's scale is recommended for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When we refer to head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The key steps in a laboratory drug test process are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs of concern. Although Screening is an economical method for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for courtroom admissibility. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening need secondary confirmation.

When a sample is presumptively positive in the Screening step, extra hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. At this stage, the concentration of drugs is extracted from the hair at significantly lower levels than through other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are pre-washed as necessary before confirmation. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab procedure is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Tough to cheat: Tampering with a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It offers a timeline of drug usage over a duration, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent intake: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
