Employment, Court Ordered, Probation, Family

Providing comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Saint Olaf, Iowa, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to solution. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing spans across all cities nationwide through our testing centers, ready to conduct a hair test. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed for analysis, which may include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over urine tests. Hair follicle testing is favored by employers with strict drug-use policies, courts, and those on probation, thanks to its extended detection period of up to 90 days, strict collection process, and difficulty in manipulation. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands offer an extended timeline of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers in the hair strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide an approximate detection window of three months for alcohol and drug presence. Hair samples are straightforward to collect, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches containing about 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp equals 100mg, which is considered the ideal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-on tests, and/or tests that exceed 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accurate specimen measurement. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable amount of body hair is acceptable. When mentioning head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result includes four critical steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial sample processing into the lab's system. This phase ensures that the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data input not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a swift, initial check for substance abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective way to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive Screening result must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any sample that tests presumptively positive in Screening requires additional confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in the Screening stage, further hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from the hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which illustrates why hair drug screening is challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any Screening positive result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptively positive are washed as necessary before confirmation. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Provides historical insight: It unveils a pattern of drug use over time, instead of just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs need about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually involves the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
