Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Saratoga, Iowa. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities in every city nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair analyses can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other specialized hair testing alternatives.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a common method in drug screenings. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests serve organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal bodies, and probationary individuals. A significant advantage is the extended detection period, lasting up to 90 days, and the observed collection method minimizes tampering, though for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is highly regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within its strands as it grows. When hair is collected close to the scalp, it offers an approximate detection window of up to three months for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximating the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, extra tests, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equal volume of body hair can be used. “Head hair” specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four primary phases in processing a drug test in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is processed into a lab’s system. This involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry omitted by electronic chain of custody systems.

Screening is an initial swift assessment for illicit substances. While it effectively rules out drug use in most samples cost-effectively, a positive screen must be corroborated for legal admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods like urine or oral fluid testing, which explains why hair drug screening is particularly challenging to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation when needed. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Showcases historical usage: It provides a timeline of drug use over an extended period, not just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth might influence the concentration of drug metabolites present in hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the tests actually assess the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Saratoga, IA, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests in many key areas. With a longer detection window and higher reliability, hair tests provide a more accurate representation of an individual's drug history. Unlike urine tests that capture recent use, hair testing covers up to 90 days, ensuring a detailed overview.

Employers benefit from the specificity of hair tests, as they identify substance use patterns that urine tests might miss. This makes hair testing a superior method for assessing long-term drug use, offering a broad detection range and undeniable reliability.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Saratoga, IA, provides an extended detection window that allows employers to assess drug use over a period of up to 90 days. This extended timeframe grants a comprehensive snapshot of an applicant or employee's substance use history, aiding informed decisions.

Employers gain an advantage by using this method as it reveals consistent drug use patterns and habits, unlike other tests that might miss such occurrences. This comprehensive view supports safer and more reliable workplace environments.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Saratoga, IA, hair follicle tests offer a tamper-resistant testing method that significantly reduces any risk of sample alteration. As these tests involve supervised sample collection, the integrity of the test remains intact, delivering undisputable results.

This method ensures that test results are trustworthy, allowing employers and legal bodies to rely on their accuracy without concerns of manipulation. The secure procedure makes hair testing the gold standard for drug testing reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
