Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Shellsburg, Iowa. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, trust Accredited Drug Testing with its expertise in hair testing. We have centers nationwide, including all cities, where hair tests can be conducted. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on your head or body is needed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the method of choice for drug screening. Many companies, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer this over the conventional urine test. Employers with strict drug-free workplace policies, courts, and probation officers utilize this method as it has a longer detection window of up to 90 days, is done under supervised conditions, and is hard to manipulate. Although, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the preferred choice for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair-based testing has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers in the strands of hair as they grow, hair reveals an extended history of alcohol and other substances. When collected from the scalp, hair offers a detection period of about 90 days for alcohol and substances. It is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands, comparable in size to a #2 pencil, collected nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels over ten, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair, while body hair indicates all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test comprises four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system. This process verifies the sample's proper sealing and dispatch, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and handles any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although a cost-effective strategy for excluding drug use in most cases, a positive screen demands confirmation for court admissibility. Presumptive positives from Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower levels than in other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening notably challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is undertaken using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive are washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is overseen under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and remains compliant with ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows usage history: They outline a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Detection of drugs in hair takes roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test focuses on analyzing the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Shellsburg, IA, hair follicle testing is increasingly favored over urine tests due to its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Whereas urine tests detect recent drug use, hair tests examine a long-term history, providing a comprehensive view of substance use. Employers find this particularly beneficial in maintaining stringent drug-free policies, enhancing workplace safety and productivity.

The benefits of hair testing in comparison to traditional urine tests are vast. Hair tests offer a broader detection timeline, highlighting even infrequent drug use that urine tests might miss. This higher level of accuracy ensures employers and legal entities can trust the results as a true reflection of an individual's substance history.

Extended Detection Window

In Shellsburg, IA, hair follicle testing stands out with its extended detection window, allowing it to trace drug use up to 90 days prior. This comprehensive screening provides employers with invaluable insight into the long-term substance habits of employees or candidates. With such detailed reporting, employers can make informed decisions that bolster workplace integrity.

The ability of hair tests to detect drugs over a prolonged period helps companies assess an individual's historical substance use more accurately than other testing methods. This extended window empowers organizations to ensure adherence to drug-free policies, fostering a safer working environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Shellsburg, IA highlights hair follicle testing as a tamper-resistant method that drastically reduces the risk of sample adulteration. The testing process demands direct sample collection under observation, ensuring that the results remain untainted and authentic. This reliability offers critical reassurance to employers who depend on accurate data to uphold workplace standards.

The unbeatable tamper-proof nature of hair tests makes them the go-to choice for enforcing meticulous drug testing policies. With fewer possibilities for evasion, organizations can trust that the collected samples genuinely reflect a person's drug usage, thereby ensuring robust compliance and trustworthy outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
