Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Sidney, Iowa. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you require, Accredited Drug Testing provides expertise in hair testing with facilities available in all cities across the nation capable of conducting such tests. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or from the body is necessary for most cases. Hair testing can identify substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to other specialized testing needs.

Increased usage of hair follicle drug tests for drug testing has been noted in recent times. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are preferred by employers with strict no-drug policies, the judicial system, and probationary monitoring. A key advantage of hair tests is their extended detection period for drugs, up to 90 days, with a supervised collection process, making them nearly tamper-evident. However, for substance use detected within 5 days, urine testing remains highly reliable.

What it is, How it works

The analysis of hair has become recognized as an efficient approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, the hair can indicate drug and alcohol use up to a period of roughly three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and easy to send.

A 1.5-inch piece consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, extra tests, and/or examinations that exceed 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn’t available, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types of hair (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process encompasses four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This process confirms the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid check for illicit substances. Although Screening is cost-efficient for eliminating drug usage in most samples, any positive result must be verified to be valid in legal settings. Samples that show preliminary positive results during Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. At this step, substances are withdrawn from the hair at a much lower concentration than in other methods (for instance, urine or oral fluids), accounting for hair drug screening being the most intricate methodology.

Verification of any positive Screening result is conducted using techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positive samples are cleansed as needed before confirmation. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, versus urine tests which have a narrower detection window.
  • Resistant to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, hence the results are more reliable.
  • Traces usage history: It delivers a pattern of drug consumption over a span of time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent consumption: It typically takes about 5-7 days for substances to be detectable in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites present in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the testing itself is performed on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
