In Soldier, Iowa, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing. Whether it's a drug or alcohol test, they specialize in hair analysis across cities nationwide, utilizing hair from the head's crown or body if it's 1.5 to 2 inches long. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other needs.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become more common for drug screens, preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over urine testing. Hair tests benefit zero-tolerance workplaces and probation checks, boasting a detection window of up to 90 days. While nearly impossible to tamper with due to observed collection, urine tests remain the go-to for recent drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the expanding hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When referring to head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core stages in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This process includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not given by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is the initial quick assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is an economical method to rule out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen needs validation to be accepted in court. Any presumptively positive samples in Screening require an additional confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the initial specimen for Extraction. Here, drugs are separated from hair at a lower concentration than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if needed. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to cheat: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite difficult, leading to more accurate results.
  • Offers historical data: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual variations in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually involves the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
