Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in State Center, Iowa. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair assessments, with testing facilities available in every city nationwide. Typically, you'll require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or body as an alternative. Hair testing can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over regular urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary programs rely on these tests. The key advantage is the extended detection period, generally up to 90 days, with direct observation during collection, minimizing chances of tampering. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent substance use within five days.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug intake by encasing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When procured near the scalp, hair samples can offer a detection span of up to about three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

An ample sample, measuring 1.5 inches in length with around 200 strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) cut near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional assays, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable volume of body hair may be utilized. When referring to head hair, this pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result laboratory process involves four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary processing of a specimen into the laboratory’s system. This process ensures that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data input not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as the initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient means to exclude drug usage across numerous samples, a positive screen requires Confirmation to be accepted in court. Samples with presumptive positivity in the Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

When a sample is indicated as presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are drawn from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to execute.

Any positive screening outcomes are Confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before Confirmation as required. The full laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 guidelines.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug examinations can recognize drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine examinations with a briefer detection span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: The hair drug test is hard to deceive, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: It offers a drug usage pattern over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug examinations are typically pricier than other testing alternatives.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Referred to as "hair follicle tests", the examination analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
