In Strahan, Iowa, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. With expertise in hair tests, we operate across all major cities nationwide, allowing us to facilitate hair or alcohol tests effectively. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body is required. Various drugs, alcohol/ETG, or personalized testing options can be identified via hair analysis.

The preference for hair follicle testing over traditional methods has surged recently. Courts, employers, and professionals in substance abuse now favor it for its stringent standards. Embracing zero-tolerance policies, organizations use hair drug tests for their extended detection—typically up to 90 days—and observer-verified procedures, ensuring minimal chances of deceit. Yet, urine tests remain precise for recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly seen as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record of alcohol and drug use because it embeds biomarkers within the strands as hair grows. By sampling hair closest to the scalp, it can reveal use within an approximate three-month timeframe for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, making tampering challenging, and the samples are easy to transport.

An ideal test sample consists of a 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (around the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, totaling 100mg. This amount is optimal for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised, best measured on a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. When discussing head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The four critical phases in lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab's framework. This process involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening provides a financially efficient method to negate drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to hold up in court. Samples with presumptive positive results at the Screening stage necessitate follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive during Screening, further hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. In this step, drugs are isolated from the hair at much lower concentrations than what is observed in other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening the most complex methodology.

The Confirmation of any positive screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Before Confirmation, all samples with presumptive positives are washed if necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards of accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Tampering with a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing accuracy.
  • Tracks historical use: Provides patterns of drug use over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Delayed detection: Detection of drugs in hair requires around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing options.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze the hair strand and not the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
